Huron Wind
Virelec was pleased to provide protection, control and SCADA equipment on Ontario’s first commercial wind farm. The facility is located on the shore of Lake Huron, Bruce County, near Kincardine. There are five 1.8 Megawatt turbines on the farm. The power from the turbines is collected at a central point where it is supplied to the Hydro One grid, at the 44kV level, through a main power transformer. Virelec was selected by AMEC of Oakville to provide the protection, control for the main power transformer as well as the protection for the utility connection.

The protection consists of mainly SEL protection relays. There is an SEL2030 communications processor integrating the relays and gathering plant data. A remote mini SCADA master communicates with the SEL2030 acting as an RTU and providing SCADA functionality for the site.
