Generator Protection Refurbishment at OPG
Virelec has supplied custom built retrofit packages for a number of generating stations for the OPG Northwest Plant Group.
Virelec and OPG’s engineers designed a new basic generator protection system using modern relays and meters. The new system took advantage of some of the powerful features built into today’s modern protection packages as well as the space savings with the multi-function relays. The full main and back-up protection with the generator metering fitted into a single panel.
Following the basic electrical design, the panel design was then implemented in a manner to allow easy retrofit at site. Each panel front size and mounting was designed to the customer’s specification for the particular site conditions, however a common modular arrangement of the relays was maintained for all the generators.

The complete system was assembled on a panel front with all terminal blocks mounted on the rear and all wiring complete.
Virelec built the first unit and supplied it to OPG where it was installed and commissioned. Following that, Virelec delivered all systems for the remaining generators at White Dog Falls, Caribou Falls and Manitou Falls.
