OSHAWA PUC MS#7, Protection refurbishment - March 2004

Virelec designs and supplies nine replacement protection door panels

Oshawa PUC Networks, a major Municipal Electricity Distribution company east of Toronto, Ontario, selected the GE UR relay range to replace the aging electro-mechanical relays at their Municipal Station 7 (MS7). The powerful UR platform integrates the traditional discrete protection functions in a single device, while adding features such as fault recording, FlexLogic and high-speed data communications.
The challenge facing utilities like Oshawa PUC is the housing of the new devices in the existing switchgear, connecting them to the instrument transformers and control circuits, and testing them on site, without disrupting the supply to their customers.

Oshawa PUC awarded Virelec a contract in late 2002 to create the schematic, connection and layout diagrams, to assemble and wire the relays on nine face-plates designed to replace the existing switchgear front doors, and to commission the relays on site. Virelec completed the panels in April 2003, allowing Oshawa PUC to replace three of the feeder protection panels by taking half of MS7 out of service without disrupting supply to their customers.

The feeder panels were commissioned successfully in March 2004, with the rest of the panels replaced and put into service by the end of 2004. MS7 will be used as a template for future upgrades of Oshawa PUC’s protection relays, ensuring the security of their supply well into the future.
