SCADA SYSTEMS FOR ENERSOURCE,
Municipal Substations 2002 - 2004
Virelec supplies SCADA system
Enersource is one of Ontario’s largest electricity distribution utilities, serving over 160,000 customers in the city of Mississauga, west of Toronto. The utility has a long-term plan to handle the increase in power demand resulting from robust economic and population growth in the city, by upgrading older and adding new municipal substations every year. Enersource has selected the GE UR relay range as its preferred protection platform and the D25 as its preferred RTU.
The D25 concentrates the data from the UR relays and transmits the relevant information to the system control centre via the DNP 3.0 protocol. Remote control of the switchgear is implemented via the UR relays in each bay over the substation network.

Enersource awarded its first contract to Virelec for the supply of a fully configured D25 RTU for the Mini Derry MS in 2002. Virelec’s scope included the SCADA system schematic, wiring and layout design, the selection and procurement of the RTU, ethernet switch and GPS clock, the configuration and testing of the RTU, and the assembly, wiring and testing of the system. Virelec also commissioned the system on site.
Enersource has subsequently awarded contracts for similar systems to Virelec for its Rubin, Summersite, Chinook and Woods municipal stations. Virelec also supplied a laboratory system for Enersource for training and testing purposes. |
