Virelec supplies DART RTU’s for PowerStream Automation.
PowerStream - serving the customers of Richmond Hill, has for some time operated a large number of SCADA automated switches on its distribution network. In 2000, the utility decided on a program of replacing its RTU’s and implement DNP 3.0 protocol on the SCADA communications circuits.
Virelec was awarded a contract to supply the new RTU’s for a number of sites with Joslyn and S&C switches. Using the basic DART RTU, Virelec designed interfaces for the controls and sensors for the selected switches. The design was finalised and approved by PowerStream and the first units were delivered in the fall of 2000.

Upon successful commissioning and having gained some confidence in the product, more units were ordered and delivered from 2001 to 2003.
The RTU is a fully self contained unit with battery, charger, controls outputs, digital and analog inputs and serial communications using DNP protocol. The analog inputs can be configured for a variety of standard and off the shelf PT and CT type sensors found in most distribution automation gear. Virelec has applied the units with both pole top and pad mount switchgear.
The RTU’s featured in this project are an example of Virelec’s unique ability to take standard off the shelf products from major manufacturers, add value in packaging and customising them and then to standardize the final system so as to ensure consistency and quality for repeat systems via the UR relays in each bay over the substation network. |
