Virelec Protection, Control & SCADA Systems
Cambridge and North Dumfries Hydro, Main Transformer Station

The Project
Virelec supplied the complete Substation Automation System of the new Main Transformer Station (MTS) for Cambridge and North Dumfries Hydro. The system was a fully integrated system using modern digital protection relays, RTU’s and a computer HMI all communicating over a dual substation Ethernet LAN.

Engineering
Virelec undertook all the detailed engineering design for the system. This included the protection panel schematics, control logic diagrams, SCADA system configuration, substation LAN and communications.
System Equipment
The system panels were built in Virelec’s factory. Some of the main protection relays were housed in the switchgear. These relays were first programmed and tested and then issued to the switchgear manufacturer for installation in the gear.

Installation and Test
Finally all the system components were assembled at site. Virelec assisted with the installation, commissioning and site testing. Virelec also commissioned the RTU link to Hydro One, the IMO and Cambridge TS’s own SCADA Master.

This was a major project for Virelec, which both equipment manufacturers and Virelec have showcased to the industry.
