Virelec Protection, Control & SCADA Systems
Virelec supplies another prefabricated Control House to Hydro One

Using the concept of prefabricated and pretested systems, Hydro One selected Royal Telecom Structures and Virelec for the protection and control refurbishment project for Coniston TS.

The contract was for the design, manufacture, test and delivery of the complete substation protection and control house.

Virelec designed and manufactured the panels in its shop while Royal Telecom completed the house, with all its auxiliary services. The house was then located at Virelec’s facility where Virelec installed, cabled and tested the panels and the complete system.
The protection relays were mainly SEL manufacture with the SCADA system being GE’s D20/D25 system with a PowerLink HMI package.

Based on Hydro One’s specifications, Virelec’s engineers prepared the relay setting files and loaded them in the relays. They then integrated the settings and relay data into the SCADA system ready for test.

The complete system was powered up using the DC system battery supplied in the house. Testing of the system was done with relay current injection, simulation of breaker and field device inputs. The remote SCADA control was tested with a SCADA Master simulator. Following system test, the control system was powered down and the building was prepared for shipment.
