Hydro One - Hearn GS
Prefabricated Protection and Control House for Substations

As part of the OPG and Hydro One demerger program, Hydro One undertook the complete refurbishment of the protection and control system by purchasing a complete prefabricated system and installing it in the existing substation yard.

Virelec partnered with Royal Telecom Structures, who provided the building, and together they were awarded the contract for the design, manufacture, test and delivery of the complete substation protection and control house.

The customer had some very specific requirements on the project, some of which caused them concern over meeting the demanding deadline. However Virelec and its team were able to deliver the system on time and Hydro One commissioned the system within its planned outage windows.
The Hearn GS substation consisted of nine 115kV lines, two station service transformers and two shunt capacitor banks. The systems contained in the house were protection, teleprotection and telecoms, SCADA, Battery systems plus DC and AC distribution.

Hydro One was very specific in the equipment to be used for each of the systems. The protection relays were mainly a mix of SEL and GE UR relays, meters were from PML and the SCADA system was GE’s D200/D25 system with their HMI package. Teleprotection was a combination of ABB NSD70 and RFL IMUX systems. Virelec was able to show previous experience in designing and delivering systems with most of these products.
