2004 - Virelec assists OPG in the Refurbishment of Hydroelectric
Plants
The Northwest Plant Group
(NWPG) of Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has selected Virelec
to supply protection and control panels for their Aguasabon
and Manitou Falls hydroelectric generating stations. NWPG,
based in Thunder Bay, Ontario, operates a number of generating
stations with a total capacity of 660MW. The oldest units
are almost one hundred years old, while all the units were
installed by the end of the 1950’s and remain a key source
of energy in the region.
NWPG first awarded a contract to Virelec to supply six new
panel fronts with generator protection relays, meters and
control equipment for the Whitedog Falls and Caribou Falls
generating stations in 2002, followed by five freestanding
panels for Manitou Falls GS in 2004. NWPG has now added
transformer protection to Virelec’s scope of supply, which
will first be applied at Manitou Falls in 2005.
“OPG expects technical accuracy and sound quality of all
equipment we apply at our generating stations”, says Jamie
Arril, Senior Plant Engineer at NWPG, “Virelec has performed
well in this aspect, while also being competitive with their
panels.” Ken Mackay, Virelec’s Marketing and Sales Manager
adds, “We recognise the emphasis OPG places on operational
excellence, and are pleased to have been selected to supply
such vital equipment for their system.” |
