Modern Substation Systems
The electricity power system industry increasingly benefits from the features available from modern substation secondary technology. The IED's installed in the substation to provide the essential functions such as protection, metering and control, can also provide additional functions such as disturbance recording and plant condition monitoring. All the information from the IED's has to be concentrated via a substation communications network and presented to both a local and remote control system. Local control of the substation is usually implemented via a HMI system which allows the operator to issue commands over the substation network to the plant IED's, while the remote control functions are usually provided via an enterprise-wide EMS (Energy Management System).

Virelec’s System Integration Experience
Virelec has developed the skills needed to supply complete substation automation systems, either as a prime contractor or part of a project consortium. In addition to the technical skills needed to provide protection, control and SCADA systems, it is necessary to execute the project on time and to effectively manage the additional logistical tasks. Virelec has successfully implemented demanding projects in Ontario such as the Hydro One Hearn GS and Coniston TS control houses, and the Charrua system for TRANSELEC in Chile.
